Throughout the various processing industries, the requirement to meter dry bulk solids is not only commonplace, but also, usually one of the more critical elements associated with a given manufacturing process. In fact, the overall performance of the feeding equipment, more often than not, is directly proportional to the quality of the end product. Very simply, a volumetric feeder is a device that meters by volume, as opposed to a gravimetric feeder, which meters by weight.

Because of their lower cost and simplicity, volumetric feeders are more widely utilized. A true volumetric feeder encompasses a method of measuring volume and a means to discharge that measured volume over a variable range by varying the speed of the feeding mechanism.
